Japan: girth as well as weight, and a small tier that ends at 250 g

Amazon Japan bands parcels by girth as well as weight, so on its own card a bulky item and a dense one of the same weight do not pay the same fee: inside the 2 kg band the published figures run from 318 to 430 yen depending on dimensions. The schedule here keeps only the weight bands and takes the top of each dimension range, so a compact parcel may be billed less than it shows here. Treat the fulfilment figure as a ceiling rather than a quote.

The small size tier stops at 250 g, the smallest ceiling of any store in this calculator, against 500 g in Canada, Australia and India and 3,900 g in Britain and the euro stores. An item that is comfortably small standard in London is a standard parcel in Tokyo. Above that ceiling the card is short and steep: ¥288 to 250 g, then ¥318 to 1 kg, ¥430 to 2 kg, ¥472 to 5 kg and ¥532 to 9 kg.

Referral rates band by price, not just by category

Japanese referral rates are quoted tax-inclusive and band by price. Most categories charge 5% on the portion of the referral base up to ¥750 and the headline rate only above it, which is why a cheap Japanese listing pays far less than the 15.4% headline suggests. Clothing is banded four ways rather than two: 5%, then 8.4%, then 12.4% between ¥2,500 and ¥3,000, then back to 8.4% above ¥3,000. Only one other row in any of these schedules rises and then falls again, Indian beauty at 0%, 14% and 10%, and no other store does it in four steps.

The per-item minimum is ¥30, and books, music, video and DVD are exempt from it at a flat 15.4%. Jewellery, watches, sports and automotive do not appear in the Japanese schedule at all, so those listings need their rate checked directly in Seller Central.

Prices include 10% consumption tax, stripped from the referral base for a registered seller.

Figures come from Amazon Japan's published pricing pages and its 2026 FBA fulfilment fee revision, effective 1 April 2026.

Japan bands parcels by girth as well as weight, so within the 2 kg band the fee runs from 318 to 430 yen depending on the parcel's dimensions; the heavier figure is used here. Items priced at or below 1,000 yen pay a lower rate that is not modelled. Storage, inbound placement, low-inventory and returns fees vary by seller and are excluded, as is the fuel and logistics surcharge Amazon applies on top of fulfilment fees in several stores. Japanese referral rates are quoted tax-inclusive and band by price: most categories charge 5% at or below 1,000 yen, so a cheap item pays far less than the headline rate.

    How we checked these figures
