How this was calculated

The United States take-home engine runs twice, on $75,000.00 and on $78,750.00, with every other option the same. The rise in take-home pay is the difference between the two results, not a rate applied to the rise, so a taper or a threshold inside the rise is counted where it falls.

Each line in the table is one deduction before and after. A period figure is the annual figure divided by 12 and rounded to the smallest unit of the currency, as a payroll run spreads it.

A result link includes the numbers you entered. Share it only with people you want to see them.

How this is calculated

A pay rise is the top slice of your salary, so it is taxed at your marginal rate, the rate on the next unit of pay, not at the average rate your payslip suggests. The calculator runs your country's own take-home engine twice, once on the current salary and once on the salary after the rise with every other option unchanged, and reports the difference in take-home pay per period, the share of the rise you keep and each deduction's change. In goal mode it searches for the gross rise that brings the extra take-home pay you name.

Both results come from the tax-year dataset listed under Data sources. The guide works a 5% rise on $75,000 and a £10,000 rise across the British allowance taper.

What this does not include

  • Bonuses, overtime and one-off payments, which payroll can tax differently in the month they are paid.
  • Benefits that change with income, such as means-tested credits, childcare support or student aid.
  • Pension or 401(k) contributions set as a fixed amount; a percentage contribution rises with the salary.
  • City and county income taxes in the United States.
  • When the rise starts: a rise from mid-year is part of one tax year and part of the next.

Pay rises after tax: marginal rates, tapers and thresholds. Why a rise is taxed at your marginal rate and not your average one, a $75,000 rise worked line by line, and where tapers and cliffs take more.
