Where these figures come from

Pay among employees: US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Usual Weekly Earnings, Table 5, third quarter 2026, Q3 2026. Usual gross weekly earnings of wage and salary workers aged 16 and over who work full time; self-employed people are not counted.

Household income: US Census Bureau, Income in the United States: 2025 (P60-289), Table 5 and Historical Table H-1, 2025. Household money income before tax, as received, not adjusted for household size; the poverty guideline rises with each extra person instead.

Some figures are published per week and are shown here per year: each amount is multiplied by the number of its periods in a year and divided by the number in yours, so every share and every rank is unchanged.

Between two published points, a rank is read along the curve that joins them, so it is given as “about”. Beyond the last published point only the published share is stated. Figures are shown for the year they describe and are not aged forward.

How the household's take-home was worked out

$75,000 less tax and contributions is $61,593 a year, for one adult and 0 children.

Each earner’s take-home comes from the United States take-home engine on its 2026 rules, as a single employee with no pension contribution or allowance beyond what the law gives everyone. Where income tax differs by state, the one chosen above is used. Joint assessment of couples is not applied.

The household lens compares income before tax, per year, so the gross figure above is the one placed against its lines.

How this is calculated

Your gross salary is ranked among employees on your country's earnings survey, read between the two published pay points either side of it, and the headline gives the share of employees who earn as much or more. Separately, your take-home and your partner's are worked out on this year's tax rules, added together, divided by the household's size on the statistics office's own scale, and set against the official poverty line, the median and the line at twice the median. Each chart names the survey, its population and its year, and the derivation under it shows the sources.

Rankp₁ + (p₂ − p₁) × ln(pay ÷ v₁) ÷ ln(v₂ ÷ v₁)

Equivalised incomehousehold take-home ÷ household size

v₁, v₂
the published pay points either side of yours
p₁, p₂
the shares of employees earning less than each point
The rank comes from your salary alone. The household lines use the take-home of everyone in the household, adjusted for its size, and the guide works both through for German earners.

What this does not include

  • Wealth and assets: savings, property and pensions already built up are not income.
  • Self-employed income: the earnings surveys rank employees only.
  • Benefits and transfers your household receives on top of pay.
  • Housing costs: the lines compare income before rent or mortgage payments.

Questions and answers

Short answers to the questions people bring to this calculator, each with the figures to try and, where one exists, the official source to check.

Because no statistics office defines rich by income alone, and the word mixes up income with wealth. The tool uses the terms the publishers use: below the poverty line, around the median, and above the high-income line at twice the median, which is the line Germany's Poverty and Wealth Report and Statistics Sweden both use. A household above it has a high income for its size; whether it is wealthy depends on savings and property, which no income survey measures.

Salary percentiles explained: two official measures. Why pay is ranked on the earnings survey and households on the income survey, where the 60% and 200% lines come from, and how household size is counted.
