How $249,000.00 was worked out
Your seven asset categories add up to $513,000.00 and your six kinds of debt to $264,000.00. Net worth is the first less the second. Each asset counts at what it would fetch today, and each debt at what it would take to clear today, so a car counts at its resale value and a mortgage at its outstanding balance, not at the payments still to come.

How this is calculated
You enter the present value of seven kinds of asset and the outstanding balance of six kinds of debt, and the calculator subtracts the second total from the first. Alongside that it separates the equity in your home from the money you could reach quickly, cash and investments less card and other short-term debts, and expresses everything you owe as a share of everything you own. The two charts and the balance sheet show which categories the figure really rests on, which usually matters more than the total.

- L
- the sum of the six What you owe fields
What this does not include
- State pensions and defined-benefit pension rights, which have no balance to enter.
- Tax that would be due if you sold an investment or a second property.
- Selling costs such as agents' fees on a home.
- Future income: net worth is a snapshot of today, not a forecast.
How this calculator works
Net worth explained: what counts, how to value it, and how to read it. Which assets and debts belong in a net worth figure, how to value a home, a car and a pension, what liquid net worth adds, and a worked balance sheet.
This calculator is for general information only and is not financial advice. Results are estimates based on the figures you enter and the stated formula; lenders and providers may round or calculate differently. Check any decision with the institution involved or a qualified adviser.
