Japan: payment processing at 6%, twice the American rate

Japan charges no regulatory operating fee, but it has the most expensive payment processing of any country this calculator covers: 6% plus ¥45 of the entire amount the buyer pays. That is double the 3% charged in the United States, Canada, Australia and India, and half as much again as the 4% charged across Europe and in New Zealand.

The three-point gap matters more than it looks, because processing is the one Etsy fee charged on tax as well as on the item price and shipping. Consumption tax that Etsy collects and remits, and that you never see, is still part of the base the 6% is taken from.

The ¥45 fixed part is an approximate local equivalent of the fixed amount Etsy publishes per country; it is small next to the percentage, but on low-value listings it is not nothing. The ¥30 listing fee is likewise a conversion of USD 0.20 rather than a separately published yen price, so it moves with the exchange rate.

Worked example: a ¥4,000 item with ¥800 shipping

Listing ¥30. Transaction 6.5% of ¥4,800 = ¥312. Processing 6% of ¥4,800 plus ¥45 = ¥333.

Total ¥675, 14.1% of the ¥4,800 the buyer pays you. Before the fixed parts, Japan's percentage load is 12.5% of price plus shipping, the heaviest of any country here: France, the next dearest, comes to 11.6%.

At the American 3% rate the processing line would be ¥189 and total fees ¥531. The Japanese rate costs ¥144 on this single order, a full 3% of revenue.

    Etsy bills the listing fee in US dollars and converts it, so the local figure here is an approximate equivalent of USD 0.20. The fixed part of the payment processing fee is an approximate local equivalent; Etsy publishes it per country and it is small relative to the percentage. No regulatory operating fee applies to sellers in this country. Offsite Ads is 15%, or 12% for shops with over USD 10,000 of sales in twelve months, and is charged only on orders Etsy attributes to one of its adverts.
