New Zealand: one of only four countries on Etsy's cheaper processing rate
Most of the world pays 4% on payment processing. New Zealand is one of four countries that do not, alongside the United States, Australia and Canada, paying 3% plus NZD 0.30 on domestic orders.
International orders are charged 4% plus NZD 0.30, so the percentage rises but the fixed part does not. This page applies the domestic figure, which means a shop selling mostly to Australia or the United States should add a percentage point to the processing line before relying on the margin.
For comparison, a German or Irish seller pays 4% plus EUR 0.30 on every order regardless of destination. On a NZD 50 sale the New Zealand domestic rate costs about NZD 1.80 against NZD 2.30 at the European rate.
Etsy does not collect GST on your domestic sales
As in Australia, Etsy's GST collection is aimed at goods imported into New Zealand, not at sales between a New Zealand seller and a New Zealand buyer. Etsy's criteria require the seller to be located outside the country, so a domestic sale falls outside its collection entirely.
That leaves GST with you. Once your turnover reaches the registration threshold you charge it, return it and account for it yourself, and the profit this calculator shows is before any GST owed on the sale.
What you do not pay, and one thing to switch on
New Zealand pays no regulatory operating fee, the charge Etsy applies in nine countries including Britain, France, Spain and Canada at between 0.05% and 1.97% of item price plus postage. It is also not among the countries charged a deposit fee on payouts.
On Etsy's own fees, New Zealand sits in the ordinary arrangement: GST is charged on them unless you supply a tax number, after which it stops. Etsy labels the field a VAT ID throughout and never mentions the New Zealand GST number by name, which is why sellers often leave it blank. Supplying your IRD number is what removes the charge, and New Zealand is not one of the countries where doing so is compulsory, so nothing prompts you.
As everywhere, Etsy publishes no GST percentage for its own fees, saying only that the rate "may vary". Whatever applies to you comes from Inland Revenue rather than from Etsy.
