Australia: Etsy does not collect GST on a sale to an Australian buyer

A persistent misconception among Australian sellers is that Etsy handles their GST. It does not, and Etsy's own wording is unambiguous: GST does not apply "if the total value of the package is more than 1,000 dollars, or if the transaction is between buyers and sellers both located in Australia".

What Etsy actually collects is GST on low value goods imported into Australia, which is a rule aimed at overseas sellers shipping in, not at you. If you are an Australian seller posting to an Australian buyer, you fall outside Etsy's collection entirely. Registering, charging and remitting GST is yours to do once your turnover requires it.

That has a direct consequence for the figures on this page. The fees here are the fees; no GST on the sale is being handled behind the scenes, and the profit the calculator shows you is before any GST you may owe on the sale itself.

Processing splits by destination

Etsy charges Australian sellers 3% plus AUD 0.25 on domestic orders and 4% plus AUD 0.25 on international ones. This page applies the domestic rate, so if you sell largely overseas, add a percentage point to the processing line before trusting the margin.

Australia shares that three percent domestic rate with only three other countries: the United States, Canada and New Zealand. Every European seller pays four.

What you do not pay

Two useful absences. Australia pays no regulatory operating fee, the charge Etsy levies in Britain, France, Spain, Canada and five other countries at between 0.05% and 1.97% of item price plus postage. And Australia is not among the countries charged a deposit fee when Etsy pays out.

On Etsy's own fees, Australia is in the ordinary arrangement: GST is charged on them unless you supply a tax number, at which point it stops. If you are registered for GST, supplying the number is straightforwardly worth doing.

One caution about rates. Etsy publishes no GST percentage for its fees, for Australia or anywhere else, stating only that the rate "may vary". Any figure you see is the statutory rate from the Australian Taxation Office rather than something Etsy has published, so verify it there.
