How this was calculated

Every figure comes from CUUR0000SA0, the official annual price index (1982-84=100). An amount is rescaled by the ratio of the two years' index levels: $100.00 × 321.9 ÷ 172.2 = $186.96.

The average per year is the compound rate that turns the 2000 index into the 2025 one over 25 years, not the mean of the yearly rates.

How this is calculated

To compare amounts across time, a salary from an old contract, the price of a house your parents bought, a pension promise, you have to convert them into the money of a single year. Enter an amount and two years, and the calculator looks up the selected country's average price index for each year and scales the amount by the ratio between them, using the index that country's own statistics office publishes. It also reports the total rise in prices, the compound average annual rate, and the reverse view: how much the original amount actually buys in the later year.

The amount and the two years are the inputs; the index values come from the series listed under Data sources, and the derivation beside the result quotes the two levels it used. The guide works $100 of 2000 money through to 2025.

What this does not include

  • Prices of particular goods: housing, tuition and electronics all move differently from the basket.
  • Regional living costs inside a country.
  • Currency conversion: adjust inside one currency, then convert.
  • What wages or investments did over the same years.
