India salary comparison: your pay against the PLFS average

India publishes no official salary distribution, so a salary here is compared with the average monthly wage of regular salaried employees in MoSPI's Periodic Labour Force Survey, as a multiple of that average, for India and for your state.

Your pay is 4.4 times the mean for regular wage and salaried employees.

India has no current official income line to compare a household with: the last official poverty line, for 2011 to 2012, measures spending per person, and no official survey publishes household income after tax.

Where these figures come from

Pay among employees: Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, PLFS data API, indicator 6: average monthly earnings from regular wage or salaried employment, 2025, by state, 2025. Average gross monthly wage or salary of regular wage and salaried employees, who are 23.6% of workers; casual labourers and the self-employed are not counted. The survey's sampling design changed in 2025.

Some figures are published per month and are shown here per year: each amount is multiplied by the number of its periods in a year and divided by the number in yours, so every share and every rank is unchanged.

Between two published points, a rank is read along the curve that joins them, so it is given as “about”. Beyond the last published point only the published share is stated. Figures are shown for the year they describe and are not aged forward.

How the household's take-home was worked out

₹12,00,000 less tax and contributions is ₹11,28,000 a year, for one adult and 0 children.

Each earner’s take-home comes from the India take-home engine on its 2026-27 rules, as a single employee with no pension contribution or allowance beyond what the law gives everyone. Where income tax differs by state or union territory, the one chosen above is used. Joint assessment of couples is not applied.

The rules for India

What the calculator above works from, read from the datasets listed under Data sources. Where a table gives the basis, “set by law” marks a figure fixed by statute or by the body that charges it, and a typical figure is a market convention the calculator opens on, which you can change.

Published gross pay of regular wage and salaried employees, per month, 2025

Only regular salaried employees are counted

India's Periodic Labour Force Survey asks regular wage and salaried employees what they were paid in the month before the interview. These are people with a regular job and a regular wage, in an office, a factory, a shop or a government post, and they are 23.6% of workers. Their average for 2025 was ₹22,699 a month: ₹24,217 for men and ₹18,353 for women.

The rest of the workforce is measured in other units. Self-employed men earned ₹17,914 on average over 30 days, and self-employed women ₹6,374. Casual labourers, hired by the day outside public works, earned ₹455 a day for men and ₹315 for women. Ranking a salary against every worker would need these groups on one footing, and the survey publishes no such figure. The calculator compares your salary with other salaried employees only, and says so.

A mean, with no percentiles

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation publishes the average and nothing else for this group: no median and no deciles. A mean is pulled up by the highest salaries, so standing at the mean is a different thing from standing in the middle. The calculator states your pay as a multiple of the mean and does not turn it into a rank.

The same survey gives a mean for every state and union territory, and the calculator shows yours when you choose it. The spread is wide: ₹42,060 in Ladakh, the highest, against ₹16,467 in Punjab, the lowest. The state is where the employee lives.

The survey's sampling design changed in January 2025. The ministry warns that the 2025 estimates may not be strictly comparable with earlier annual reports, so setting this year's mean against an older PLFS figure mixes two designs.

Gross salary, before provident fund

Offer letters usually quote cost to company, which includes the employer's provident fund contribution and often gratuity. The survey asks what the employee received as wage or salary, so the figure to enter is your gross annual salary from the salary slip, before your own provident fund contribution and tax.

Worked example₹6,00,000 a year in gross salary
ItemAmountHow it is obtained
Gross salary for the year₹6,00,000From the salary slips, not the CTC
Monthly gross the calculator compares₹50,0006,00,000 ÷ 12

The calculator sets ₹50,000 beside the all-India mean of ₹22,699 and, if you choose a state, beside that state's own mean.

Try it with these figures

No household comparison

India's last official poverty line, set by the Tendulkar method for 2011 to 2012, measures spending per person, and no official survey publishes household income after tax. With no current line or median to place a household against, the calculator shows the salary comparison only.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this calculator in India, answered for the rules there. For help interpreting a result or comparing it with a quote or statement anywhere, read the calculator's own questions and answers.

The Periodic Labour Force Survey publishes the average wage of regular salaried employees, not a median or percentiles, and income tax statistics publish no official thresholds for the top 10% or 1%. A rank would have to be estimated, and the calculator does not estimate. It states your pay as a multiple of the published average instead.
