How this was calculated

Every rate and threshold above comes from the dataset listed under Data sources on this page, with the official publication it was taken from and the date we retrieved it.

Each line under “What comes out of your pay” opens on its own derivation. Where a country charges by formula rather than by band, that is where the steps are listed, and the marginal rate is measured from the formula itself. The rules are annual; a monthly, two-weekly or weekly figure is the annual one divided by 12, 26 or 52 and rounded to the smallest unit of the currency, which is how a payroll run spreads it.

A result link includes the numbers you entered. Share it only with people you want to see them.

How this is calculated

Take-home pay is what reaches your bank account after the government's share of your gross salary is withheld, and two kinds of deduction do most of the work in every country here: income tax, charged in progressive bands or by formula, and earnings-based contributions such as Social Security and Medicare in the US, National Insurance in the UK, and the statutory insurances that fund pensions, health care and unemployment cover elsewhere. The calculator applies the published rules for the tax year you choose in three steps: it subtracts the tax-free amount everyone gets to find your taxable income, runs that income through the bands, charging each band's rate only on the slice inside it, and then works out the contributions, which use gross pay and have their own thresholds and caps. Every figure is then shown for the pay period you choose.

contributions

Gross is the salary you enter; the allowance, bands and contribution rates come from the tax-year dataset named under Data sources, and each deduction line opens on its own derivation. The guide works $75,000 through the bands one by one.

What this does not include

  • US city and county income taxes, which matter in Maryland, New York City, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
  • Benefits in kind, company cars and circumstance-specific credits.
  • Payslip timing: cumulative tax codes can make one month differ from a twelfth of the year.
  • Items settled in an annual return rather than through payroll.

Take-home pay explained: allowances, bands and contributions. The three steps every country's rules share, $75,000 worked band by band with FICA, what marginal and effective rates mean, and the limits of the model.
