Finland: the tax is a share of the price, and emissions set the share
Finnish car tax combines the two approaches used elsewhere on this site, which makes it the harshest of the lot on an expensive car with high emissions.
Autovero is a percentage of the vehicle's general retail value on the Finnish market. The percentage itself is set by the car's CO2 figure. So price and emissions both enter the calculation, and a dirty expensive car is charged twice over: a larger percentage, applied to a larger base.
The scale in force runs from 0% at zero emissions to 48.9% at 360 g/km or more, with the lowest non-zero rate at 2.7%. It has applied to registrations since 1 October 2021.
Compare the Netherlands, where the tax depends on emissions alone and a cheap car and an expensive one with the same CO2 pay exactly the same. In Finland they do not, and the gap between them widens as the emissions rise.
Electric cars pay nothing, and that is recent
A fully electric or hydrogen car has an autovero rate of 0%. That has only been true since 1 October 2021: registrations between January 2019 and December 2020 paid 2.7%, and in December 2018 the rate was 3.3%.
Worth stating plainly, because the opposite is often assumed: autovero has not been abolished generally. It remains a live tax in 2026 on everything that burns fuel. What was abolished was the charge on zero-emission cars specifically.
What goes in the fields on this page
VAT at 25.5% and autovero are both already inside the advertised price, so there is no tax field here and nothing to add on top. That also means the tax is financed along with the car: on a high-emission model, a meaningful slice of your monthly repayment is servicing the tax rather than the vehicle.
A trade-in reduces the loan euro for euro of its equity. There is no Finnish equivalent of the American trade-in tax credit, so the only saving is the interest you avoid on the smaller balance.
Registration and first-year charges belong in the fees field only if the dealer is financing them rather than asking for them up front. If you are weighing an electric car against a combustion one, the autovero difference is already inside the two sticker prices you are comparing, so do not add it again.
