German pay is taxed by Steuerklasse. The tax year is the calendar year, but what an employer withholds each month depends on which of the six tax classes you are in, so two people on the same salary can see different payslips: a married couple choosing III and V shifts withholding between them that the annual return later settles. The solidarity surcharge now applies only where a single person's income tax exceeds 20,350 euros a year, and church tax, for members, is 8% of the income tax in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg and 9% elsewhere. The take-home pay calculator works through each class. Buying a home costs Grunderwerbsteuer at a rate each Land sets, from 3.5% in Bavaria to 6.5% in four Länder, with no relief for a first purchase; the stamp duty calculator has every Land.

Two habits change the longer-term numbers. The statutory pension is most of a German employee's retirement income, and its standard age, the Regelaltersgrenze, reaches 67 for anyone born in 1964 or later; the retirement calculator is best used for the gap between your Renteninformation and the income you want. And most German cards are charge cards, cleared in full by direct debit each month, so a balance that revolves is the exception and a fixed-rate Ratenkredit the usual way to spread a large purchase. A car carries no purchase tax beyond VAT, but an annual Kfz-Steuer set by engine size and CO2, from which electric cars registered by the end of 2030 are exempt until 2035 at the latest; the car loan calculator covers what you borrow, not that bill.

The calculators below are set up for Germany, and each one says which of these rules it models. Every dataset behind them is listed at the foot of this page with the date it applies from.
