Rupees now, or pounds kept for later
The table above ranks services by the Sri Lankan rupees that arrive, but rupees are not the only way to receive money in Sri Lanka. The Central Bank's Department of Foreign Exchange lets banks open Personal Foreign Currency Accounts under Directions No. 04 of 2021, issued under the Foreign Exchange Act, No. 12 of 2017. Sri Lankan nationals, people of Sri Lankan origin living abroad and some others can hold one as a savings, current or term deposit account in a designated foreign currency, and remittances in foreign exchange received through the banking system are a permitted credit. The Directions were amended in March 2026, according to the Central Bank's list of policy measures. If pounds are credited to such an account, the recipient decides when to convert them, and the rate that matters is then the bank's rather than the transfer service's.
Why a bank may ask what the money is for
Sri Lankan banks report international payments to the Central Bank under the International Transactions Reporting System. Its reference manual for banks requires a purpose code on international credits, and says the bank must identify the purpose of the transaction. The exceptions are credits below USD 3,000 or equivalent to a personal rupee account or a foreign currency account, and money received through money transfer services. A larger bank-to-bank payment can therefore bring a question from the recipient's bank, and a clear reference on the transfer saves time.
Moving it on once it arrives
Domestic transfers in Sri Lanka run on the Common Electronic Fund Transfer Switch. The Central Bank's payments systems page says it credits customers in real time, 24 hours a day on every day of the year, while banks settle with each other in two cycles each business day. A recipient can pass money to another bank on a Sunday; the international leg into Sri Lanka still follows the sending provider's own timetable.
Incentives come and go
During the foreign exchange shortage the Central Bank paid an extra incentive per US dollar on workers' remittances converted into rupees through licensed banks in December 2021, and extended it to 31 January 2022. Schemes like these were tied to formal channels and to conversion into rupees, and they were time-limited, so check the Central Bank's press releases for anything in force when you send.
What the UK firm must do with your money
The FCA's guide to using payment service providers explains that the Financial Services Compensation Scheme does not cover money held by payment firms. Authorised payment institutions and e-money institutions must safeguard it instead, but small payment institutions do not have to, so look the firm up on the Financial Services Register to see which kind it is. The currency converter shows the mid-market rate to compare a quote against, and the money transfer comparison works through what it delivers.
