How this is calculated
Enter the bill, any tax shown on it and the tip you want to leave, and the calculator works the tip out on the amount before tax, adds it to the bill and divides the total between the people sharing it in whole cents, so the shares always add back to the total. Rounding the total or each share up to a round number adds the difference to the tip, and the tip as a share of the bill is shown after that rounding, so you can see what you really left. Pick a country to open on its own currency, its customary tip and the service charge habits a tourism body or consumer regulator describes.
Each share(B + (B − T) × p) ÷ n
- B
- Bill
- T
- Tax on the bill
- p
- Tip, as a decimal
- n
- People sharing the bill
What this does not include
- Service charges already on the bill: check for one before adding a tip.
- Card terminal prompts that work the tip out on the total including tax.
- Who receives the tip: rules on passing tips to staff differ by country.
- Tax on tips received, which is the worker's matter, not the diner's.
How this calculator works
Tipping and splitting a bill: the arithmetic and the customs. How a tip is worked out on the bill before tax, how a split shares the odd cents, what rounding up really adds, and how tipping differs between countries.
