How $1,161,695.38 was worked out

With a level SIP the future value is P × ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i × (1 + i), where P = $5,000.00, i = 0.01 a month and n = 120 months: $1,161,695.38. The last factor, (1 + i), is there because each instalment is invested at the start of its month and earns that month's return.

Assumes a constant return, before tax and exit loads. An estimate, not financial advice, providers may calculate differently.

How this is calculated

Every month's instalment is treated as invested on the first day of that month and grown at a constant monthly rate until the plan ends, and the calculator adds the grown instalments together. By default the monthly rate is the expected annual return divided by twelve, the convention of the industry body's own investor-education calculator, with an option for the slightly lower compound equivalent that some platforms use instead. With a step-up, the instalment rises every twelve months by the percentage or amount you set, and the sum is worked month by month rather than by the closed formula below.

FVP × ((1 + i)n − 1) ÷ i × (1 + i)

FV
the value at the end of the plan
P
Monthly investment
i
the monthly rate: Expected return a year ÷ 12
n
the number of instalments: Years × 12
The final factor (1 + i) counts each instalment from the start of its month. The derivation under the result fills in your figures.

What this does not include

  • Market ups and downs: the return is held constant every month.
  • Expense ratios, unless the return you enter is already net of them.
  • Exit loads and capital gains tax on redemption.
  • Missed instalments and the timing of NAV allotment.
