It is a mid-market rate. Banks and card providers quote 1 to 4% away from it and may add a fee, so this is the benchmark to measure them against, not the amount you will receive.

How this is calculated
The converter multiplies your amount by the rate between the two currencies you choose and shows the result along with the rate in both directions, so you can sanity-check the number against a quote from a bank or card provider. The rates are the European Central Bank's daily reference fixing, one rate per currency against the euro, published each working day at about 16:00 CET; because every rate is quoted against the euro, converting between two other currencies goes through the euro as a cross rate. The fixing is a mid-market benchmark rather than a price anyone is offered, so the gap between this result and a provider's quote is what that provider is charging.
rate(from → to)units of TO per euro ÷ units of FROM per euro
convertedamount × rate(from → to)
- units of X per euro
- the ECB fixing for currency X, quoted as how many units one euro buys
- rate(from → to)
- how many units of the target currency one unit of the source currency buys
What this does not include
- Provider margins and transfer fees: a real transaction costs more than the reference rate.
- Currencies outside the ECB's list of 30.
- Historical fixings: only the latest working day's rates are loaded.
- Intraday movement: the fixing is one snapshot at about 16:00 CET.
